How air taxi charter works

What air taxi is, how it differs from a commercial flight and from a private flight, what to put in a quote request and what drives the price.

By Florais Táxi Aéreo

Quick answer

  • Air taxi is an on-demand charter flight: you hire the airplane for your own leg and agree the date and destination with the company, with no fixed schedule.
  • Unlike a scheduled commercial flight, which follows a fixed timetable and itinerary, air taxi is non-scheduled. Unlike a flight in a private-category airplane, it can only be provided by a company authorized by ANAC.
  • To ask for a quote, give origin, destination, date and number of passengers. The price depends on the route, the dates and the waiting time, and is confirmed in the quote.

What air taxi is

Air taxi (táxi aéreo) is the air transport service in which the fee is agreed between the customer and the company that carries them. To charter is to hire the airplane for a leg of your own.

In Brazil, air taxi is a service authorized and supervised by ANAC (Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil), and only companies that meet a series of requirements can provide it. The rule is RBAC 135, which ANAC applies to public air transport operations with airplanes of up to 19 passenger seats or helicopters.

Florais Táxi Aéreo charters passenger flights within Brazil, as non-scheduled flights, with one airplane: the Embraer EMB-810D PT-VLR (Seneca III), for up to 5 passengers. The base is Hangar 15 at Marechal Rondon International Airport, in Várzea Grande. Florais does not fly medical evacuation, international flights, sightseeing flights or dangerous goods. See the service on air taxi charter and the airplane on the PT-VLR aircraft.

How it differs from a commercial flight

In ANAC's glossary, a scheduled flight (voo regular) is an air link between two or more places, with a flight number, operated according to a fixed timetable, itinerary and frequency. The same glossary says every other situation counts as a non-scheduled flight.

In practice, the difference is this:

  • On a scheduled commercial flight, the timetable, itinerary and frequency are already set before you ask.
  • On an air taxi, the leg and the date are agreed with the company, in the quote, for your flight.

How it differs from a private flight

ANAC separates the private-category aircraft from the air taxi aircraft. For an airplane to start operating as an air taxi, it needs a certification process that checks whether it has the safety level needed to carry passengers, and its category can change from private (TPP) to air taxi (TPX) by meeting RBAC 135.

That is why the service can only be provided by an authorized company, and ANAC asks the customer to check the company and the aircraft before flying. The steps are in How to check an air taxi with ANAC.

ANAC also publishes an infographic with the main differences in requirements between air taxi and private aviation (opens in a new tab), in Portuguese.

What to put in a quote request

The form on the quote page asks for these details:

  • Origin and destination of the leg.
  • Date of departure and, if any, the return date.
  • Number of passengers: the Seneca III PT-VLR carries up to 5.
  • Name and phone number. Email is optional.
  • Useful notes, such as luggage, preferred time and the destination airstrip.

Boarding documents

ANAC keeps a page on the documents for boarding domestic flights, with guidance by age: Brazilian children under 12, teenagers from 12 to 15, Brazilians from 16 on and foreigners of any age. The page also warns that a student card is not an accepted identification document for boarding.

Use ANAC's Documents for boarding (opens in a new tab) page (in Portuguese) as a reference for each passenger's documents.

What drives the price

Every flight is quoted from scratch. The price depends on the route, the dates, the waiting time at the destination and the number of legs (each stretch flown).

That is why this guide gives no prices. The charter page shows the straight-line distance from the base, which is not the route, the flight time or the price. When you are ready, ask for a quote for your flight.

Questions and answers

Does air taxi have a fixed schedule?

No. Florais air taxi is non-scheduled: the leg and the date are agreed in the quote. A scheduled flight, by contrast, follows a fixed timetable, itinerary and frequency.

How many passengers fit in Florais' airplane?

Up to 5 passengers, in the Seneca III PT-VLR. Luggage and weight go into flight planning: say in the quote what is coming along.

How do I know a company is authorized?

Look up the company and the aircraft in Voe Seguro, ANAC's public lookup. The steps are in How to check an air taxi with ANAC.

How much does a flight cost?

Every flight is quoted from scratch: the price depends on the route, the dates and the waiting time at the destination.

Does Florais fly outside Brazil?

No. Florais does not fly international flights: all flights are within Brazil.
